A breech homebirth - Part 2 ♥️

But then something strange happened… her contractions began to slow down and her midwives were no longer able to find heart tones down below like they had been throughout the day, instead heart tones were now being found higher up on the belly like they had been in the previous weeks. It was then suspected that baby Lainey had backed up out of the pelvis and turned breech again.

It was clear that she wanted to keep us all on our toes. At this time, lots of emotions filled the room. J had to then process again, the possibility of having a breech birth. After getting out of the tub she went to labor in the bed in the attempts to try to rest and give her body a break. Her contractions had mellowed out a tiny bit compared to the tub. We held space for her as she started to wonder if she could do this- absolutely reassuring her that she can and she will.

After some time laboring in the bed, J decided to go to the bathroom to relieve her bladder. Just after getting out of the birth pool she told her midwife that she absolutely did not want to give birth on the toilet, however, Lainey did not agree to that and she had other plans that contradicted her mother’s desires.

J went to sit on the toilet and almost instantly began having the most intense contractions we had witnessed throughout the day. Her body instantly began to bear down and push with such a force that I instantly knew she would in fact be having her baby on the toilet. Her midwife and I locked eyes and nodded to each other communicating to each other without words that, “this is it.”

Then we start to see a little foot dangling outside of her body halfway in the toilet seat. With the most ferocious power I have ever seen in my life, J gives birth to her sweet baby girl. Completely in utter shock and amazement at what she had just done. She powerfully, gracefully, beautifully *and* safely delivered her breech baby at home covered in so much love by her husband, mother, and her entire birth team.

A breech homebirth - Part 1 ♥️

Baby Lainey had turned breech late in J’s pregnancy (~37 weeks) and needless to say there was a lot of emotional and mental processing that had to be done. After a few attempts to encourage baby girl head down it was clear that this sweet Gemini babe was determined to make her entrance in to the world in a breech presentation. So after consulting with her husband, midwives, pregnancy and birth support team- J (mom) then decided to start preparing for a breech birth knowing that she was fully supported.

There is so much unlearning to be done when a mother/bp wants an out of hospital birth, let alone delivering a breech baby, which is almost unheard of in our country. J left no stone unturned as she took in as much knowledge and information as she could in the short bit of time she had left in her pregnancy.

In the early morning of June 13th, J woke up after feeling a big gush of fluids fill the space around her in bed- her water had broke! Shortly after she started experiencing some contractions as well. This is the day she had been preparing for.

Later in the morning, J’s midwife came to her home to check in on her and we got the news a short time later that baby girl had flipped back head down and a cervical check also had confirmed that J was also 6 centimeters dilated! 🤯

She was basically having a silent labor for the most part! Not to mention J then had to process the fact that she was no longer going to be having a breech birth. Her contractions steadily picked up over the next few hours. J was the calmest I’ve ever seen a mama be during labor and I had joked that she was going to have a pain free birth. However shortly after I said that things began to ramp up.

J got in the birth pool as we suspected she would be delivering this baby soon. Her contractions grew stronger and more intense, baby girl was incredibly low. But then something strange happened…

What a birth. What a family. What a woman!

When I look back at these photos all I think about is the abundance of love, joy and devotion that surrounded us this amazing night.

This family and I shared a pretty instant connection from the moment we met. I knew that they deserved 100% truth and honesty, no sugar coating- their birth depended on it, her sense of self and motherhood depended on it.

We built a relationship based off of honesty and authenticity and with that came trust and love and true friendship.

My name is Loreal (Lo) I am a birth doula and owner of World Between Worlds based here in San Antonio, Texas and happily supporting beautiful families in its surrounding areas. I am also a certified Placenta Encapsulation Specialist and certified HypnoBirthing Childbirth Educator.

A few fun facts about me:
1. I have a five year old daughter and she is the ENTIRE reason I am a birth doula today (so thank her lol)

These are the moments in between labor contractions 🤍

When you are held by your partner. You find peace and feel a deep sense of unconditional love wash over you.

You let out a sigh because you remember that you are safe here in this moment, that you are covered in love and so you breathe… You surrender.

And because you are in the midst of birthing yourself and your baby, after just a few short minutes of peace you begin to feel the rise of the next wave that is ready to bring you closer to your baby.

And you may ask yourself what do I do to get through this intensity and pain? You give it to God because it’s not yours to keep.

And so you let out a sigh because you remember that you are safe here in this moment, that you are covered in love and so you breathe… you surrender and you continue the process ♥️✨

One of our December babies made their entrance on Christmas morning 🎄Right after his siblings finished opening up their presents he decided now was *his* time to shine ✨

His mama’s contractions started to pick up with incredible intensity and speed (after a week of prodromal labor) and less than an hour later he was born into his mother’s arms on their bathroom floor with his three siblings stunned and teary eyed while watching in the hallway right outside the bathroom door 🥹

This was an incredible and empowering birth that required so much patience and trust on the mama’s part so let’s talk about what was happening behind the scenes really quick…

Anybody who has experienced prodromal labor knows how much of a huge mental game it is and how it can take a toll on your emotions as well. In most situations you are contracting pretty consistently and they’re increasing in strength so you start to think, “it’s finally time to have my baby” just for them to begin to fizzle out and then nothing… night after night. Day after day.

And then you start to wonder… “Am I ever going to have this baby? Am I actually in labor or is this all in my head?” Until finally one random day or night those contractions begin to pick up again with such speed and force and they just don’t stop until your sweet baby is in your arms 🙏🏾

While prodromal labor is such a start and stop process it is important to know that cervical change and progress in labor is being made throughout the entire time. So each contraction you experience is helping you to get closer to baby even if at some point they cease altogether for a short while.

In the earlier part of the week her contractions never got any closer than 8 to 10 minutes apart and in the last two days of laboring her contractions never got any closer than 15 to 25 minutes apart. The week was filled with lots of encouraging words to the mama to help her remain patient and trust in herself, her body, her baby and the divine timing of it all- the universe was demanding it. Reminders to rest, to eat, to have faith, and to rest again. 🤍

In the month of my four year doula anniversary I was honored to support a very special family in welcoming their baby boy earth side. My 100th birth and family supported 🥹♥️🙌🏾

Some connections are instantaneous and that’s how it was when I first met C & B. Over the weeks teaching and guiding this sweet couple we were able to foster a real relationship between the four of us (and Eddie 🥰). Taking note of C’s pure resilience and strength, her quick witty humor and beautiful quirks. Also observing B’s dedication to his wife, her health, their growing family and home.

A woman who is made of all the tough things the world has ever thrown at her but still manages to show up in the world with a soft and kind heart. This is a woman that I knew would absolutely rock her birth and I couldn’t wait to bear witness and support.

I made up in my mind that this was gonna be the birth of the year (not making the connection or even slightly realizing that this may be my 100th birth). And when I tell you that this birth was everything I expected it to be PLUS MORE…. because you can never really predict labor 😉

Powerful and unwavering in your strength. Comical in even the toughest moments. Surrendering to the journey in its entirety. You are a formidable force, C.

Tug of War - one of my favorite ways to utilize my rebozo during labor 💪🏾✨

Pushing during labor as a first time mom/birthing person can be a little (or a lot) tricky! Knowing which muscles to use or where to direct your energy force confuses a lot of us the first time and can sometimes result in longer pushing periods. When you hear your provider or doula whisper to each other and use the words “tug of war” just know it’s about to get real! 😉

Using a rebozo, bed sheet or towel can help you to give your body and baby an extra boost in strength and power that you need to help move your baby down effectively through the pelvis down to crowning. You’re holding one end and your doula, provider, partner, WHOEVER really is holding the other end.

When it comes time to push, you and the person on the other end will both try to pull each other towards one another! Believe it or not, it is *very* effective in helping your sweet baby to come down.

Approximately 1 in 4 women and birthing people are induced in the U.S. and that rate increases up to 10% when we specifically look at first time mothers and birthing people.

Often times with no explanation as to why an induction is necessary and when given a reason it’s usually one of the following:

“If your baby gets much bigger, it’ll be difficult for you to push them out.” 🚩❌

“You are a petite woman, your baby will get too big to fit through your pelvis if you wait much longer.” 🚩❌

“Your placenta will start to age and decay and won’t be of much service to your baby after 40 weeks.” 🚩❌

“The chances of still birth increase as you continue to go past 40 weeks of pregnancy.” 🚩❌

What do all these phrases have in common with each other?

None of them are medically necessary unless a specific circumstance applies to you and your baby.

The first two are flat out lies and impossible to know just by looking at a woman and the size of her baby- but are two of the most common reasons for induction.

Ask about the ABSOLUTE RISK for each of these concerns. This will give you an opportunity to understand the actual likelihood for any TRUE need of any medical intervention.

Last but not least, each of them play upon increasing your fear and doubting your ability to give birth to your baby safely without medical intervention.

Would you believe me if I told you that we are all born with a superpower? Let me tell you the story of how I found mine ♥️

In my adolescent years, I always felt overwhelmed by my emotions… because I would feel them with such an intensity that I was absolutely sure nobody else on this planet felt things the way I did. If I was sad I was REALLY sad and although it was rare for me to feel anger, when I did, I’d become overwhelmed with rage.

By around the time of 17 or 18 I started to believe that my ability to feel emotions so intensely was a curse. Sure, it provided me with a great capacity to love and understand others but it also felt torturous to also have to endure such negative emotions that I experienced. I learned to unenthusiastically accept it, meh.

When I became pregnant with my daughter, I was terrified at the thought of giving birth to her. I would not so jokingly ask people, “how do I give birth to this child without giving birth to this child? Can I just wake up and she’s already in my arms?” (😂🥴) but I knew that was not actually possible. And although I was terrified of pushing a whole human head through my vagina an entirely new and contradicting thought came flying into my head… which was that… I felt like I was meant to feel the highs and lows of birth. I knew in my heart that I didn’t want to actually medicate myself to numb my body to the sensations of labor.

It seemed that my mind, body and spirit demanded that I FEEL the entirety of this upcoming experience as I had done in every other time of my life. So right then and there I knew that I had to prepare myself for physiological childbirth….

True story! You are not at risk of blood backflow if you decide to delay cord clamping to more than 60 seconds which is most current hospital standards.

It is actually very beneficial to leave your baby attached to their cord until the cord goes white! Why?

Glad you asked! Because before birth 1/3 of your baby’s blood is retained within the cord and placenta. So giving your placenta some time to continue pumping all that good blood back to your baby is incredibly beneficial.

Hi, welcome! I am so grateful to have you join me here. I am Loreal and I am the owner of World Between Worlds. I am deeply passionate about empowering women + birthing people to create greater space and opportunity for their wildest dream births to come true. This passion was brought to life during the time of my pregnancy with my daughter back in 2019. Learning of her existence gifted me the courage and strength to begin to dream of a labor and birth that I never knew was possible. My desire to have a beautiful and safe birth experience outweighed the fear that so many of us are indoctrinated with from such young ages. And so I embarked on this journey to equip myself with as much knowledge as I could retain and I fell in love in the process. I want the same for you.
